Il Était Un Vernis Teach Me Tonight

Like My Area of Expertise, Teach Me Tonight was released last month by French boutique polish maker Il Était Un Vernis as part of the Back to School collection. Co-creators Bé and Stéphanie describe this polish as an ink blue base with gold/copper/pink color-shifting metallic shimmers and a veil of holographic particles. In the bottle, this polish looks like a scattered purple holo with loads of coppery pink shimmers, but it's much deeper and more mysterious than that on the nail. Edina of Lakkomlakkom says it reminds her of Chanel Taboo in its depth.

On the nail, Teach Me Tonight is a fathomless deep indigo that's like the depths of space. Deep within, a blanket of coppery pink shimmers emits a stealthy royal purple glow that creates an exquisite "lit from within" blackened plum appearance. In the sun, this shimmery radiance is more overt -- you can see the wave of tiny shimmer particles as they light up, and a dusting of prismatic sparkle twinkles on the surface, even forming a linear sheen at oblique angles.

Application was crazy good. The consistency of Teach Me Tonight is fluid, smooth and dense with a medium viscosity and a lush, self-leveling glide over the nail with a bit of pull to it. It went on best for me in medium coats from a well-loaded brush. Pigmentation is outstanding, delivering evenly opaque coverage and full color in one medium coat. I added a second to finesse some lines, but it didn't change the appearance of the color except maybe to deepen it a tiny bit further, but that very well might have been a trick of the mind. Cleanup was remarkably easy, with a skosh of pigment travel and a bit of trace staining, not an issue if you're a neater painter than I am (and most of you are). Teach Me Tonight dries naturally in very good time to a beautiful glossy finish.

Photos show two coats of Teach Me Tonight over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

I wish I could have caught more of that shimmery inner glow, but I just didn't have enough light on this overcast day. Still, I hope you can tell how rich and sultry this polish is. I don't usually fall for vampy shades, but this one has my heart. Can't tell you why, maybe because it's blue? Or maybe because it is so flippin' majestic, with its inky darkness and secretive inner radiance.

If you love your vampy shades, I encourage you to try this one!

love,
Liz

    1. The shimmer in this polish is more overt than you'd think from my photos, especially in bright light. But even when you don't see the shimmer, that deep inky blue color is wonderful and mysterious and so flattering. I love this polish, and I never fall for vampy shades. Usually because they are typically so dark that you can't see the color clearly. Somehow this wasn't the case with this polish. I can't explain it!
