Il Était Un Vernis Field Trip Fun

Field Trip Fun was released earlier this month by French boutique polish maker Il Était Un Vernis as part of the Back to School collection for fall 2016. Co-creators Bé and Stéphanie describe this as a purple with greyish brown undertones and copper microflake shimmers. It's holographic as well, in the delicious velvety creme holo style that the brand is known for, and OMG people, it is utter perfection for fall! The color is a medium-dark Chinese violet, a smoky fig sort of shade heavily silvered and softened by finely-milled holographic pigment, which generates a warm, dimensional prismatic bloom. Superabundant tiny copper microflakes shimmers adding a soft, radiant rosy-taupe quality to the violet and can be seen gleaming brightly at certain angles to the light. Beautifully composed, complex and sleekly dimensional on the nail, it evokes the long, lingering, purpled shadows of autumnal twilight.

Application was absolutely lovely. The flawlessness of Il Était Un Vernis' formulas is very like that of A-England and equally as gratifying to work with. The consistency of Field Trip Fun is fluid, full-bodied and creamy with a medium consistency and a luxe, velvety, self-leveling slip over the nail. It is wholly user-friendly and a delight to finesse with Il Était Un Vernis' sleekly compact flattened-style brush. Pigmentation is excellent. Evenly opaque coverage can be had in one medium coat, although you'll want two to maximize the rich autumnal violet color as well as the holographic effects. Cleanup is easy. Field Trip Fun dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat amplifies the presence and effects of the coppery microflake shimmers and does not in any way inhibit the polish's holographic properties.

Photos show two coats of Field Trip Fun over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

For me, this polish captures perfectly that moment at the end of an autumn day when the mind is re-energized by anticipatory thoughts of that evening's fall-related festivities, happy gatherings of friends, colleagues and family in a warmly lit home.

Understated but rich and fulfilling on the nail, Field Trip Fun has a poised, sophisticated look and a timeless feel that seems particularly apt for fall holidays. There's a sense of congenial charm to it as well, a naturalness that makes it easy and companionable to wear. It's the kind of polish that will acquit itself beautifully no matter what the circumstances or occasion may be.

This my favorite of all the fall shades I've tried so far this year. Smoky, chic, elegant -- if you love the richness of fall colors on your nails, you owe it to yourself to seek this one out. It's amazing!

  1. I love your review of this polish. It is delightful to observe this captivating polish as your words roll through the gray matter! Your lyrical descriptives make a person pause and contemplate the intricacies of it. It makes me so grateful to be involved in polish at this time in its history, with so many wonderful makers and the polishes they create. There is an intimate relationship with these unique polishes - very often, only the wearer, or someone standing very (very!) close, can perceive the ethereal, sublime qualities they bring to light. Sometimes, you want to shout to the world about their beauty... but then you would be deemed a crazy person, and, hey, life could get complicated with that! Best to gaze in appreciation and gratefulness, and a tinge of awe!, at the mostly unobserved beauty on your nails!

    1. Wow! I am humbled by your praise! I have to say that you know my writing well and have a knack for picking up on my enthusiasm! I adore this polish. It is incredibly evocative, the look of it filled my head with recollected and poignant autumnal moments. It's like the art in artisanship, that kind of thing, where the elements of a creation just come together in an emblematic, meaningful, graceful way.

There are certainly plenty of people who think this kind of enthusiasm for nail polish is crazy or trivial, but then they had a limited perception of it in the first place. You know that saying, that God is in the details? (Or, if you're a car detailer, the devil's in the details.) Well, there you go. No, nail polish isn't going to change the world, but that's completely beside the point.

It must have been such fun to be at Polish Con in Chicago, surrounded by like minds! I wish I could have made that trip!
