Emily de Molly Shadow on the Moon

Shadow on the Moon was released in February this year by Australian indie polish maker Emily de Molly (EdM). This is officially described as a medium grey holo with pink-to-gold color shifting shimmers and silver holographic microglitters. Creator Hayley excels at using grey as a canvas for gorgeous complex shimmery holographic creations and Shadow on the Moon is just such a polish.

Infinitesimal intensely pink microflake shimmers glimmer exquisitely within, infusing the smoky grey with a fine dusting of pink and creating a transparent pink sheen in ambient light, randomly dotted with tiny ephemeral sparks in blue and green from the microglitters that give the polish a graceful twinkling aspect. The prismatic display in the sun is mind-blowing. There's a dazzling, super sparkly linear flare with arcs of bright azure and green surrounding a glistening underlay of exotic pinkish grey that appears along the axis of light, all of it awash in brilliant prismatic sparkle. This polish has an oil slick vibe going on with its prismatic colors, a titanium-fumed drusy crystal kind of thing that makes it look like some unearthly elvish gem.

Application was absolutely lovely, par for the course with EdM lacquers. The consistency of Shadow on the Moon is fluid and light with a thin-to-medium viscosity and an impeccably smooth, self-leveling slip over the nail. Pigmentation is very good, delivering evenly opaque coverage in two easy coats, and if you do your cleanup as you go along, you won't have as many sticky microflake shimmers and microglitters as I did. Shadow on the Moon dries naturally in very good time to a soft finish with a barely discernible texture from the components, easily smoothed by a single layer of topcoat. Topcoat pops those pink-to-gold shimmers and does not affect the holographic properties of the polish in any way.

Photos show two coats of Shadow on the Moon over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

My sun shots don't hold a candle to the actual appearance of this polish's prismatic flare in person. Take a peek at Traci's photos of Shadow on the Moon in her review on The Newsie Nail Novice, here, for a better idea. It's magical!

If you love complex holos, you'll want this one. The subtle, shimmery colors that embellish the smoky grey base, the effects of those genius pink microflake shimmers and the magnificent, sparkly holographic display are testament to Hayley's creativity and skill at combining components for unique, richly appointed looks. I love this and so will you!

  1. Your mani of this polish is just so beautiful! It looks so complex and I love your way of describing it.
My nails have been a train wreck for months now and I just can't bear to put bright and brash polish that shouts Look At Me on them. I have noticed the last couple of years that I have been migrating more and more toward the more neutral-ish polishes. For those and other reasons, I have been wearing sheers or neutrals and such lately (even though I love to see the more colorful polishes reviewed, and continue to buy them :) ). But I do like a neutral that offers excitement also! For myself, I would call this a dark neutral and, wow, does it ever have some fireworks!

    1. Thanks so much, Lara!

What have you been working at with your hands that your nails have suffered? You're a colorist at heart, is why you love seeing the brights even if you don't wear them very much. If you're leaning toward neutrals with pizzaz, this is an excellent choice. Also Emily de Molly Four Weddings and a Manicure -- so pretty on the nail, makes you feel like a million bucks!

  2. My nails have gotten so thin and there are two or three that always split up into the nailbed if I try to grow out a free edge. I suppose I need to take calcium supplements and stuff. And, omg, the ridges. I never had any nail problems until after menopause! I will probably put on some acrylic dip soon. As much as I hate messing with it, at least it allows me some decent nails. And I miss polishing as much as I used to! But it hasn't stopped me from polish buying. Just ordered F.U.N. Starry Night Of The Summer. I need me some nail for that polish!

Hey, great minds! I just ordered that polish myself! :)
