Cirque Madder

Madder was released in November 2015 by NYC-based indie polish maker Cirque Colors as part of the Holiday 2015 collection. Creator Annie describes this as a deep crimson holo, and I agree. It's a strong, cool-leaning variation of red with aspects of cherry. Tiny holographic microflakes flash and sparkle in bright red within it, while more finely-milled holographic pigment creates nuanced hues of deep cardinal and red violet in ambient light. The color brightens a bit in the sun, where there's a gorgeous prismatic display with a glowing band of violet trimmed by a shifting corona of bright rainbow sparks framing a central lick of gleaming semi-metallic bright red.

Application was a pleasure. The consistency of Madder is fluid, light and smooth with a thin-to-medium viscosity and an effortless, self-leveling slip over the nail. It's an eminently paintable formula that is easy to manipulate with Cirque's round flexible brush. Pigmentation is excellent, with even opaque coverage available in only one coat, though you'll want two for best holographic effects. Cleanup is pretty easy for a well-pigmented red, with a bit of pigment travel as you might expect but little residual staining. Madder dries naturally in very good time to a beautiful glossy finish. Topcoat does not inhibit the holographic properties of the polish in any way.

Photos show two coats of Madder over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

  2. My heart is going pitter, patter! Yep, loving this beauty! It's strange that a beautiful red polish can make me melt into a love puddle, but I do not like cars in red paint. Or red accents. Or red upholstery. But make it into a pretty polish and I am bewitched!

    1. *lol* Red polish is your siren song.

How could you not love a red car? Red used to be my favorite cars to detail, so responsive! Makes my eyes happy!
