SuperChic Lacquer REM

REM was released at the end of September this year by California-based indie polish maker SuperChic Lacquer as part of the Dreamology collection, a series of powerfully pigmented linear holographic polishes with one-coat coverage. I have two from this collection to show you, beginning today with REM.

Creator Jen describes this polish as "an incredibly intense vibrant ebony black shade formulated with fierce color depth and intense linear holographic effects." And so it is. This is a rare beast, a true licorice black without any sense of being silvered or greyed out by the abundant finely-milled holographic pigment it carries that does indeed generate a compact definitively linear prismatic display both in direct sun and in bright indirect light as well. Huzzah! The only trace of holo pigment you can see in it is a subtle floating bronze glow, which has a soft-focus effect on the appearance of the polish, gentling the harshness that often accompanies a pure black polish and giving it a sleek but soft quality.

Application was fantastic. The consistency of REM is fluid, creamy and dense with a smooth glide over the nail that has a bit of pull to it. It goes on in thin to medium coats and is easily manipulated with SuperChic's short-wanded flattened flexible brush. While a fast-drying polish, it still gives you some time to finesse your application before it begins to set up, which I appreciate. Pigmentation is outstanding, with completely opaque even coverage in one coat. I used two coats to best camouflage my nail ridges, which more or less disappeared after the second coat. Cleanup is surprisingly easy, with some pigment travel as you'd expect from a polish like this but no residual staining to speak of. REM dries naturally in very good time to a silky smooth, slightly flat finish that wants a glossy topcoat to look its best.

Photos show two coats of REM over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite. The holographic effects look a bit swallowed up in my pics. In person they are much more overt.

If you've been looking for a true black holo that applies like a dream, is easy to clean up, retains its color quality and produces a colorful linear flare, REM is for you! Elongating and slenderizing to the fingers, it also has a particularly dexterous, effortlessly graceful sense to it. Chic! Plus it sort of gives me a "mistress of the universe" vibe -- the silky luster of the black with its soft bronzey glow and pinpoint prismatic sparkles feels quite empowering. I hope it goes straight to my head.

love,
Liz
