Digital Nails Supernova

Supernova by indie polish maker Digital Nails is a deceptively simple composition: silver holographic microglitter in a clear suspension base. But as we all know, mostly after the fact, simplicity delivers the goods. And in this respect, Supernova is the best kind of simplicity.

Raphaelle Yax, the owner and creative force behind Digital Nails, has this to say about the genesis of Supernova:

"I knew I had something special on my hands the moment I mixed this glitter into base. It's gorgeous in the bag but it looks like most other silver holo glitters, rainbow-filled and blinding. Lots of times, the true rainbow effect gets lost in the base. The light just can't reflect on the surface of the glitter like it could, and the effect is dulled. That is not the case with this glitter. Upon opening the first bottle I mixed and applying it to my nails, I'm pretty sure I said something along the lines of HOLY @#$%. I had a few nailfriends over to have fun and make frankens, and I just so happened to have remembered that I hadn't used this glitter before. We all marveled in the impossible amount of rainbows coming from my two dabbed coats, and they knew and I knew at that moment this had to be something that everyone could have. I dubbed it Hooker Heels and we all made a bottle. After playing around with it some more, I changed the dilution of the glitter because I found my original amount to be overwhelmingly gloppy, and Supernova was born."

Application was delicious. My eyes were so enthralled they just about popped right out of my head and did the happy dance right there on the tub surround. The consistency of my bottle was a little thick, so I added several squirts of polish thinner, enough so that I could hear the mixing ball hit the side of the bottle when I shook it. After that, it went on beautifully. This will never be a thin watery polish, but it's surprisingly easy to manipulate and goes on smoothly and evenly. As with many full coverage glitters, it takes multiple coats to achieve an opacity that you're happy with. I've seen swatches of it at two, three and four coats and they all look spectacular, so it's really a matter of personal preference. Mine was three coats. I still had some tiny places where the glitter didn't cover, but they're undetectable by the unaided eye. Cleaning up after this polish is not something you want to do, period. Luckily it goes so effortlessly that an immaculate application is within the grasp of almost everyone, even me.

Photos show three coats of Supernova over treatment and basecoat. This polish dries naturally in very good time to a finish that while textured from the glitters is not rough or scratchy. I added a coat of Gelous and followed with a topcoat of HK Girl to finish.

Still photography will never do justice to a polish like this and I feel that mine are particularly insufficient. For a better idea of what this polish is like in person, hop on over to Thithi's Pretty Tough Nails post on this polish here.

Supernova is no mere nail polish, it's a bottle of OMG! And it wears like iron! What more is there to say?

love,

    1. So glad you like it, Melissa! It IS stunning. As in shock and awe stunning! Thank you for complimenting the photos but I wish I could have gotten all of the glitters to do their own little holos too, that's the way this polish looks in person. I think Thithi got a lot closer to that than I did.
