Barielle Slate of Affairs

This nail polish is a puzzle, Eleanor. I can't quite figure out what color it really is. I've looked at photos from reviews online for almost an hour and it looks different in every review! I've seen it described as everything from periwinkle to royal to slate to denim. People love it, people say meh to it, people return it because it doesn't dry. It's thick and goopy, it's thin and runny. It's sheer, it's opaque. It's bright, it's dusty. It's complementary, it's unflattering.

I didn't expect consensus -- experiencing nail polish is a personal subjective thing. But I was looking for a convergence of sorts. DENIED!

The polish is Slate of Affairs by Barielle, who describe it as "worn denim." Hmm. Not so satisfying, that. To me, in the bottle it appears as a medium-dark cool grey with blue violet undertones and a modicum of bright blue shimmer. On the nail, in shade, it is more of a medium-dark dusky blue violet with grey overtones. The shimmer is readily apparent in natural light and makes its presence known otherwise by way of adding a certain dimensionality to the polish as a whole.

As far as application goes, Slate of Affairs is very liquid but not to the point of pooling. After one coat it was somewhat translucent, but in a good way, in a way that adds richness and depth to the color and high shine to the finish. Like a jelly. But it's not a jelly.

Two coats and it was opaque. I applied a topcoat of Seche Vite immediately to speed the drying process and keep the dent gremlins at bay.

I have to say that I am really enjoying Slate of Affairs. It's having an interesting effect on my psyche. It makes me feel taller, like I have better bone structure, thinner legs, thicker hair, longer fingers and great nail beds. It makes me want to walk around with my hands on my hips. It makes me want to strategize and buy high performance summer tires for my car.

The hell you say! I don't know, I can't explain it. I'm not even really sure what color it is.

As a greyed blue violet, the way it looks right now in my office, it's a lovely soft deep color of the sort that you feel you could just fall in to. But then there's the dark kind of turbulent cadet grey shot with azure shimmer that it morphs into in direct sun, very mysterious. Maybe even dangerous!

I like it. You?

love,
Aunt Liz
